This is the perfect walk for those who have not yet experienced a night on the High Plains. The walk itself is an easy 6kms out to the huts at the former cattleman’s yards, all on track and is eminently suitable for FIRST TIME overnighters. Experienced overnighters are more than welcome to join us.
It also a great little precursor and practice run for the Tawonga Huts Gourmet Weekend the following month.
The walk follows the Australian Alps Walking Track from Cope Hut, passes Cope Saddle Hut and then along a maintenance track beside the viaduct. Last time I did this trip we took about two hours walking at a leisurely pace and after a 20-minute stop at Cope Saddle Hut.
There are plenty of level grassy places to pitch a tent, an ample water supply and a very comfortable and cosy hut where we can cook our meals and socialise. If it’s hot (or not) we will take an afternoon hike to the ‘Secret Waterfall’ where there is a beaut swimming hole, so bring you bathers, (or not). In the past there has been some skinny dipping!
If you are worried that you may not be properly equipped, remember you can hire gear from Adventure Gear, Albury or we can rustle up whatever you might need.
I hope as many “first timers” as possible can join me on this little adventure!
