Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th December 2022
Due to the landslide on the BHP Rd between Mt Beauty and Falls Creek, the road is closed “until before Christmas.” This means (assuming the road is not open) to do this walk to Whiterock Falls and Ropers Hut we will need to go via Mitta Mitta and the Omeo Highway, before turning right onto (the other end of) the BHP Road. We will be car camping on Friday night at Buckety Plains Campground so that we can still start walking from Watchbed Creek by 8am on Saturday morning.
You can either drive up independently or leave Albury at 3pm and car pool.

Starting Watchbed Creek we will follow The Big River Fire trail past Mt Nelse and Warby Corner to Ropers Hut. The Fire Trail to Ropers Hut is a well-defined gravel MV track that has great views.
After setting up tents and having lunch, we will head off to find Whiterock Falls, before returning to Ropers Hut for the night. There is also the option of spending the afternoon relaxing at Ropers Hut.
Whiterock Falls are at the head of Whiterock Creek, which eventually flows into Big River. They are on the western side of Big River Fire trail close to Ropers Hut. Getting to the falls requires some open off-track walking. The walk to Whiterock Falls is ungraded, as there is no track and will involve walking across open often uneven and boggy terrain. There may also be some rock scrambling to view the falls but this is optional.
On Sunday morning we will pack up and return to cars. If it’s not too late we may stop in Mitta Mitta for a quick snack.
